Real talk-
The older I get, the more I have struggled to feel worthy of carrying on the name of my Pop-Pop, James Lawrence Thompson, Sr., the late husband of Mom-Mom, Helen Alphagean Thompson.

Sure, not the best way to begin, but hey...

My fondest memories of Mom-Mom came through a bond that goes deeper than our family name.

Although I grew up in and around the church my whole life, I was never truly saved. I was a false convert that knew just enough to send me to the Lake of Fire. However, in 2005, God in His mercy snatched me out of a life of sin into a saving relationship with HIM.

It was extremely difficult to tell my family about this change since they only knew of my rottenness before Christ found me.

On no particular afternoon, I was sitting with Mom-Mom. She was telling me about her recent hospital visit when I asked her if we could pray together. Her saying yes didn’t surprise me; what occurred after I said “Amen” has forever impacted me.

“You’re a preacher...like, my husband!” It wasn’t EVEN those that words that moved me though; it was her eyes. Eyes full of joy, that God had granted me repentance and that we both loved the same Jesus...a connection that went way deeper than any shared name (first, middle, or last). Of all the memories I have of Mom-Mom, I’ll cherish this one forever!

Mom-Mom, thank you for being a godly example for our family. Thank you for the legacy that you leave us. I am honored to share your last name and the name of your husband. But above everything, I am humbled to share the name of Christ with you!
